There are people who enter our lives as musicians, colleagues or collaborators, and somehow become something much more.
Alan Smith was one of those people.
When Alan joined the band
When Alan joined Tebu's band, he connected deeply with the music. Over time, he became a trusted friend, a source of encouragement and, at times, something like a big brother. Conversations between them could move anywhere: life, music, ideas, experiences. And almost without warning, a conversation could become the starting point for a new composition.
A few weeks before Alan passed away, he gave Tebu a handpan.
That gesture stayed.
The voice of a new composition
Nearly two years later, the instrument became the voice of a new composition.
The Eternal Rhythm was composed using the handpan Alan gifted him. The piece grew from memory, improvisation and reflection, not as an attempt to recreate the past, but to allow something from that relationship to continue moving forward.
What it carries
The handpan carries Alan's generosity.
The composition carries their connection.
The music carries the memory.
A tribute and a continuation
For Tebu, The Eternal Rhythm is both a tribute and a continuation: a reminder that although a person may no longer be physically present, their influence can continue through the people they touched, the ideas they shared and the music they helped inspire.
The rhythm continues.
