Organisations weighing up a booking can ask for a reference from a comparable client, a school for school work, a venue for performance, a university for teaching or research. Contact details are shared with the referee's permission, and put you in touch with someone who has actually done it.

How feedback is gathered
Every workshop series, residency and commission ends with the same questions, asked in writing.
Did it do what you booked it for?
The stated aim, checked against what actually happened, not whether it was enjoyable. Enjoyable is easy; useful is the harder test.
Who took part, and who did not?
The people who stayed at the edges of the room matter more than the ones who were always going to join in. Their absence is the most useful information a session produces.
What would you change?
Asked directly, and answered honestly often enough to have changed how the sessions are structured more than once.
Would you book it again?
The only question that is difficult to be polite about, which is why it is always the last one.
