The founder
Born and raised in Cameroon, Serge Tebu is a composer, producer, lecturer, musical director and multi-instrumentalist whose musical journey spans more than 25 years across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and South Asia. His practice has been shaped by formal training in jazz, orchestration, composition and arrangement, alongside years of working with musicians, artists, educators and communities from different cultural backgrounds.
His experience reaches far beyond performance. Serge has composed and arranged music, produced recordings, led bands and musical projects, taught piano, jazz, composition, songwriting, improvisation and African drumming, delivered workshops and masterclasses, and worked across music, photography, film and visual production. He plays piano, bass guitar, percussion, handpan and vibraphone, bringing together different musical languages through an approach grounded in listening, experimentation and collaboration.
Traditions that are not separate worlds
His musical thinking has been deeply influenced by African, Latin, Brazilian and jazz traditions, but he does not see these as separate worlds. His work explores what happens when traditions meet, when musicians from different backgrounds listen to one another, and when ideas are allowed to move freely between cultures and disciplines.
A simple but powerful philosophy
Over the years, these experiences have shaped a simple but powerful philosophy: creativity should not be confined by categories. A musician can be a composer, producer, educator, performer, researcher and storyteller. African rhythms can meet jazz, Latin music and contemporary production. Music can connect with film, photography, movement, technology, education and lived experience. Knowledge can be shared rather than kept within institutions or closed circles.
This is The Unboxed Musician, Serge's way of approaching creativity and life. It is about questioning established boundaries, remaining curious, embracing different influences and having the courage to create outside familiar definitions.
The space that grew from it
TebuSpace is the space that has grown from that philosophy.
It brings together the different worlds Serge has spent years moving between: music and culture, artists and audiences, practice and research, performance and education, tradition and contemporary creativity. Through music, stories, film, photography, podcasts, conversations, learning, workshops and collaboration, TebuSpace creates opportunities for people to encounter different perspectives, share knowledge, develop ideas and make things together.
The intention is not simply to present African culture or creative work, but to create a living space where culture can be explored, knowledge can be exchanged, artists can experiment, communities can participate and new connections can emerge.
